The COVID-19 crisis has already rendered more than one in five families in the United States food insecure. At the same time, farmers have no choice but to destroy millions of pounds of food that they can no longer sell to restaurants. FarmLink comes in here. We are a grassroots movement striving to prevent food waste during the COVID-19 pandemic. FarmLink is proud to partner with Food Finders, a 501(c)(3) food rescue organization with a similar mission to our own: reducing hunger and food waste by connecting farmers to food banks. Uber Freight has also recently partnered with us to help transport produce from farms to food banks.
The past three weeks have been a whirlwind. FarmLink has salvaged and delivered more than 239,620 pounds of surplus produce to food banks, feeding over 160,000 individuals in need. This number includes:
123,240 pounds of potatoes from Fall River Farms in Idaho to food banks in Detroit, Los Angeles, Salt Lake City, and Wyoming.
50,000 pounds of onions from Owyhee Produce in Oregon to Food Finders in Los Alamitos, CA.
35,000 pounds of lettuce from True Leaf Farms in San Juan Bautista, CA to The Food Bank of Santa Barbara County
24,000 pounds of zucchini from Wilson Produce in Arizona to Feeding San Diego Food Pantry in California.
1,380 pounds of eggs from Trafficanda Egg Ranches, Inc. in Van Nuys, CA to three food banks in the Los Angeles area.
Additionally, we have paid $4,514 in wages to the individuals who provide FarmLink with produce and transportation. These numbers are rising by the day, so head over to our website to check them out! Next week, we have arranged the transportation of 6,000 pounds of different types of vegetables (celery, carrots, potatoes and sweet potatoes) from Happy Dirt Farm in North Carolina to Central Virginia Food Bank in Richmond, Virginia. But this is just the beginning.
We express our sincerest gratitude to everyone who has contributed their time and energy to making all of this possible. Whether you are a farmer, transporter, or individual who has donated, we are extremely grateful for your contribution to FarmLink. Your support grants our FarmLink team the ability to keep moving forward, providing food banks with produce that would have otherwise gone to waste. We need your help—please donate whatever you can here today! 100% of the funds raised go directly toward buying produce and paying industry workers. Thank you so much for joining our mission to feed individuals in need while saving industry jobs during the COVID-19 crisis.
