Every Minute 40,000 lbs of Produce Go to Waste

Theodora Heredia

Good Evening Farmlinker,

In one minute, the world will consume 11.5 million pounds of food.

In the same minute, 2 million pounds of food will go to waste.

Food loss occurs for a variety of reasons before it even reaches the market: bad weather, processing problems, overproduction, and unstable markets. These disruptions to the agricultural production chain affect small farmers the most by decreasing saleable volumes; an estimated 30-40% of food produce can be lost in this process.

After reaching the market, part of the food waste problem falls in the hands of consumers with throw-away mindsets, defined as excessive consumption and waste of food and other products. Many people fall under this social concept in their day-to-day lives, whether its using single-use plastics or buying too much food. Compared to retail businesses and restaurants, households globally are responsible for 61% of food waste.

So what can you do to be a part of the solution to food waste? In your own home, challenge yourself to maintain sustainable practices: avoid overbuying by planning meals and shopping mindfully, try cooking with less waste, or learn how to compost! These are all ways in which you can help.

You can also help by continuing to support our mission at The Farmlink Project! In our lifetime, we have rescued over  80million pounds of food, accounting for over 58 million meals. As these numbers continue to grow, so does our vision for the future of Farmlink and ambition in tackling food insecurity.

It only takes a minute to continue following our journey through our social media @farmlinkproject. Stay connected with us as we work to change the scope of food insecurity around the world!
